After years of hit R&B albums and touring the world as Maroon 5’s keyboardist, PJ Morton, returned back to his gospel roots with the Grammy-nominated album, “Gospel According to PJ,” in 2020. Now, there’s a documentary chronicling the challenge of producing the all-star project at the height of the global coronavirus lock down.
“Although I was putting out my R&B albums and [working] with Maroon 5, I never really left gospel music,” says Morton. “I don’t have to be a different PJ to write my R&B albums [or] to be in a pop band. I don’t have to be a different person to write [ballads like] ‘First Began’ or ‘Say So’ and then turn around and write [gospel anthems] ‘Let Go’ or ‘Over and Over.'”
“I’m the same person and God is so big that when we limit him to one thing it does a disservice. I just wanted to show people that it was possible,” he added.
“The Making of Gospel According to PJ” features rare footage of Morton performing as a youth, as well as, interviews with album participants such as Kirk Franklin, Smokie Norful and Tasha Cobbs Leonard. It’s an extraordinary look at how Morton’s childhood church background influenced his adult R&B and Pop music catalogue.
