Gospel Rap, Christian Hip Hop whatever you want to call it; I call it good music, clean music, music that inspires, music I could play around my Pastor or my Grandma. So, the genre conversation is irrelevant for this article “Why Drake Should Turn CHH”. Below are my reasons why Drake should turn to positive, uplifting music, that glorifies Jesus.
1. Legacy
The greatest icons in Hip Hop (Tupac, Notorious BIG, etc) legacies don’t compare to to the greats like MLK. Hip Hop icons have there niche, and Drake has just about maximized this niche. Then we look at a man like King David whose Psalms have survived thousands of years. We don’t know what genre David wrote the book of Psalms in, but nonetheless they have survived the test of time. Don’t worry about your homies outliving you Drake, when Jesus tells the story about you, your legacy is stitched in stone.
2. Revival
With the recent death of Billy Graham, one the of the worlds greatest evangelist and revivalist; we are now in a time when our nations is in need of revival. With murder, suicide, and depression all at all-time high’s we are in need of the gospel. If Drake would begin to share a message of hope, and inspiration through his music; I’m sure it would help to bring revival, and change.
3. Money
Drake is beginning to get a little bit older, therefore his base audience is getting a little older. No matter how much the next generation may revere you, no one is going to ride for you like your day ones. I grew up listening to Lil Wayne. The problem is when I began to change, and evolve as a person as I got older, Lil Wayne’s music stayed the same. Therefore I no longer found myself listening to Lil Wayne’s music. In this industry artists have a short lifespan. Not just Hip Hop but the secular music industry period. The greatest like Michael, Whitney, Eminem, all career’s were practically over by the time they hit 40. Welcome to gospel music, where things get better with time. Shirley Caesar is 80 and just as popular as she was 50 years ago. Switching to CHH would keep Drake relevant a lot longer. Snoop Dogg finally got the revelation… 20 years after the last time anyone listened to his music. Mama always used to say, “strike while the irons hot”.
4. Culture
We have been looking for a change in our culture for a long time. Music has great influence in our lives, and especially in the lives of our youth. I grew up in a situation where I did not have to hustle to survive, or put food on my families plate growing up; but the Hip Hop culture inspired the greed in me to chase money illegal. Now you see me today, someone who has been to prison, and has a list of felonies, and misdemeanors on my record. I do not blame Hip Hop for MY choices, but what if the culture that currently promotes greed, mistreating women, and violence would begin to influence us to seek God, and strive for greatness?
5. Jesus is Lord
At the end of the day this is the only reason that really even matters. None of will go down as G-O-D, that position already belongs to Jesus Christ. It is our responsibility to worship the creator, and not creation.
